Cup Victory!
Mr Baston talks us through the action:
A Story of Redemption
September 2021, the first round of the Welsh Cup Maesteg vs Brynteg. Maesteg made a good start to the game but were soon overpowered by a strong and cohesive Brynteg side. We lost that game 9-2 and the feeling of disappointment was felt across the school. We were out of the cup before we had even finished picking the team, it seemed. All was lost.
However, after a friendly against Llangynwyd where we won 10-1, spirits rose. We were into the new year and onto the first round of the Bridgend Cup with confidence. We breezed past Cynfig with a comfortable 12-0 victory and it was onto the quarter final. Archbishop put up a good fight but the Maesteg boys were flawless in every way. The semi final at home proved to be challenging. After a comfortable 2 goal lead into the second half, victory seemed inevitable. Bryntirion scored early in the second half to make it 2-1 and the boys fought to the dying seconds to hold them off. We were into the final…
After a postponement we found out our competitors in the final were our old nemesis, Brynteg. The nerves on route to the game were spreading and a forgotten kitbag with our tops and practice balls in it didn’t help the tension (Blame the manager for this). Finally, we kicked off. Somehow we found ourselves 2-0 down with about 10 minutes to go in the first half, and the general consensus was ‘is this a repeat?’
After a scrappy goal and a superb volley we found ourselves back in it at 2-2. With about 5 minutes to go in the game Brynteg scored to make it 3-2. The resilience and passion the Maesteg boys showed from there was inspirational. A late penalty scored by Man of the Match Keano Conaty put us level with minutes to go. Incredibly, Maesteg scored in the dying seconds to make it 4-3 with less than a minute to go. We held on for victory and our redemption story was complete.
I am so proud of these boys and how they have acted throughout the year. They have been professional, resilient and incredibly hard working and they deserve the victory. Special mention to Captain Rohan Thomas who has guided the team through this year with brilliance and tenacity.
