As part of a literacy intervention, 10 pupils from Year 8 were chosen to take part in a programme designed to engage students in ‘reading for pleasure’.
Every Monday after school for 10 weeks, the group completed literacy tasks solely based on football. One of the tasks involved a visit to the home of Swansea City, The Liberty Stadium, where they had the chance to interview former Swans striker, Lee Trundle.
As a final treat, Lee came to the school in April to hold a coaching session. Lee had the pupils engaged in various drills, a match scenario and a penalty shoot-out to finish. Afterwards he talked to the group about the positive impact gained from extra literacy lessons and the importance that reading makes in our lives.
Lee didn’t leave before showing off some impressive skills – although our boys did pretty well themselves – we think he was impressed! We would like to take this opportunity to thank Lee for spending the day at Ysgol Maesteg, it was a pleasure to learn first-hand from such a talented athlete.
