Last week we were treated to an intimate performance from Year 13 pupils: Cira Dunlop, Emily Thomas and Rhys Watkins, for what was their final Drama BTEC assessment. We caught up with Rhys post performance, to get his reaction on ‘The Woman Who Cooked Her Husband.’
Well done Rhys, how do you feel that went?
RW: Well we were over the moon as the curtain fell, a real relief to be honest. It was stressful in the beginning, pre-match nerves kicked in because it was our exam, but we knew we had to get it done and thankfully we maintained our focus and the play was a big success. I think all of our hard work in the last two years has paid off.
The interplay between the characters was hilarious Rhys, intensified by the macabre undertones flowing through out. How did you feel, playing the role of Kenneth? The audience didn’t warm to him!
RW: I had fun growing into the role although it was hard to play such a disgusting man… Kenneth is a pig! I got to break some taboo’s, as the play deals with some provocative issues, some I hope to never come across in my own life! The three of us have spent a long time rehearsing and crafting the characters in to our own, which I hope came across in our adaptation.
Finally Rhys, how does it feel to have wrapped up your time here?
RW: I’m very sad to be leaving but I’m glad to have gone out on a high! I feel the support and encouragement I’ve received at Maesteg school has prepared me well for my English and Drama course at Cardiff MET in September. In the long run, I’m thinking about doing a PGCE and If I ever become a teacher, It would be fab to come back to Ysgol Maesteg.
Well we wish you all the best Rhys, a huge congratulations to all of the cast, we really enjoyed ‘The Woman Who Cooked Her Husband.’
