This year pupils throughout Wales faced an extremely tough set of challenges. They had to complete 2 Maths exams, Maths Numeracy and traditional Maths and a completely new style GCSE English paper with a significantly reduced coursework element. They also had to pursue traditionally, ‘academic’ courses as the value of vocational courses was reduced this year. The children of the 2017 cohort across the country have been the ‘guinea pigs’ of this new system and have done their very best under challenging circumstances.
Maesteg School pupils achieved some impressive academic and personal achievements. 97% of our pupils achieved at least one A*– C grade and no pupil left the school without a qualification. There were some outstanding individual performances in English, Maths, and Science and there were also some excellent overall results in Physics, Biology, and Chemistry, Drama, Art, Music and Textiles, French and PE.
‘It has not been an easy year for pupils and teachers across Wales, but our pupils have done their very best and made the Maesteg school community proud. Their results are the culmination of hard work from pupils and teachers alike and unstinting support from parents. We are very proud of their achievements and hope to welcome them back into our sixth form to enable them to continue on their learning journey.’
As always there were some outstanding individual performances. Particular mention should go to:

Amy Ford – 6A*, 2A, 6B
Niamh Beynon – 4A*, 6A, 4B, 1C
